How much space do you need for a padel court?

Padel is growing rapidly in the Netherlands and more and more sports clubs, entrepreneurs and municipalities are considering building padel courts. But before you get started, it is important to know how much space you need for a padel court. In this blog, we explain the dimensions you need to keep in mind, the extra space you need to keep clear and what to consider when installing a padel court.

Official dimensions of a padel court
According to the official guidelines a standard padel court has a size of 20 x 10 metres. This applies to both indoor and outdoor courts. The court is surrounded by glass walls and fencing, and in the middle is a net with a maximum height of 88 cm in the middle and 92 cm at the sides.

For single padel courts, which are suitable for one-on-one matches, smaller dimensions apply: 20 x 6 metres.

Minimum space around the track
Besides the official dimensions of the padel court itself, you need extra space around the court for players, spectators and accessibility. This depends on the location and type of facility:

  • Free play area: At least 0.5 to 1 metre of extra space is needed at the sides and behind the court to allow players to move safely.
  • Walking and accessibility: Provide enough space around the court for players and spectators to move around easily.
  • Grandstands or seats: Do you want a luxurious look or extra facilities such as stands or benches? Then count on at least 2-3 metres of extra space on the long side of the track.

How much space do you need for a padel court complex?
Do you want to build several padel courts next to each other? Then you need to consider the total space you need:

  • 2 padel courts side by side: 22-24 metres wide and 20 metres long
  • 3 padel courts side by side: 33-36 metres wide and 20 metres long
  • 4 padel courts side by side: 44-48 metres wide and 20 metres long

When building padel courts indoors, the minimum height of the ceiling is an important factor. The KNLTB recommends a minimum height of 7 to 8 metres, but 9 to 10 metres is recommended for professional competitions.

Conclusion
For a single padel court, you need at least 22 x 12 metres space, but if you want to build a real padel complex, you need to think carefully about extra space for playing comfort, facilities and walk-out areas.
