Insight, research and solutions for padel and noise
Padel is a fast-growing sport in the Netherlands and more and more clubs and commercial venues are realising new courts. At the same time, padel brings with it specific noise characteristics that, depending on the surroundings, can be perceived as a nuisance by local residents. Proper preparation and technically sound measures are therefore essential in any site development.
Important concerns with padel and sound
- Impulse sound of racket against ball as biggest source
- Additional reinforcement through glass walls and cage effect
- Game level and intensity influence noise levels
- Voice and peak noise play into practice
- Activities Order contains standard limit values
- Average sound power is around 89-91 dB
- Acoustic investigation necessary within area of influence
- Handreiking Padel and Noise provides guidance
- Distance from homes varies by location
- Noise barriers possible as a screening measure
- Canopies can support noise reduction
- Early coordination with municipality prevents delays

STEP FOR STEP
For example, we technically map noise impacts of padel courts.
We assess the surroundings, distance from houses and spatial situation. On this basis, we determine whether acoustic research is necessary.
Together with specialised partners, noise levels are calculated on noise-sensitive destinations. This allows testing against legal limit values.
When necessary, we advise on noise-reducing facilities such as screens, canopies or adapted layout of the sports park.
Legislation and Activities Decree
Within the Activities Decree, standard limit values are included for noise around sports facilities. Vocal noise and peak noise from sports activities may not be taken into account when assessing these limits. As a result, mainly the average noise of padel play is assessed.
Municipalities use these frameworks as a basis within permit processes. Therefore, it is important to have a timely understanding of noise levels and possible measures.
Areas of influence and distance from dwellings
To properly assess the impact of padel noise, an acoustic study is necessary. This will accurately determine the noise impact on surrounding residences and other sensitive destinations.
The Handreiking Padel en Geluid calculates areas of influence in which research and noise shielding are plausibly required. The exact distance between court and residences is always site-dependent and influenced by buildings, duration of activities and shielding objects.

Acoustic research and technical solutions
Allesvoorpadel works together with Van dB Advies, specialist in acoustic research for padel courts and consultant for the KNLTB. This allows projects to be prepared technically sound towards the municipality and surrounding area.
When measures are needed, several solutions are available. Canopies with perforated roof panels can reduce noise, while noise barriers behind or next to lanes provide additional screening. The right measure is always tailored to the local situation.
Challenges in noise pollution around padel courts
Noise control is one of the biggest challenges when implementing padel courts, especially in urban or residential environments. The specific impulse noise of padel is perceived as a nuisance faster than in traditional sports. In addition, municipal interpretations of regulations and areas of influence vary from site to site. Without acoustic research, it is difficult to properly assess the feasibility of an initiative in advance. The choice of screening facilities also requires customisation and technical justification. Through early research and appropriate solutions, projects can be carried out responsibly and future-proof.

Frequently asked questions about noise pollution from padel courts
Padel produces impulse sound due to racket contact and the ball hitting glass walls. The cage amplifies this effect, so the sound can be more penetrating than in tennis.
When is acoustic research mandatory?
Acoustic studies are almost always necessary within certain areas of influence and at locations near residences. This tests for legal limit values.
What solutions are there against noise pollution?
Possible measures include noise barriers, canopies with absorbent panels and smart layout of the track layout. Everything will be tailored to the site.
Can Allesvoorpadel guide this process?
Yes, we accompany the entire process from site analysis and research to technical solutions and coordination with the municipality and surrounding area.
