Noise nuisance
Padel is an emerging sport in the Netherlands and many tennis, other sports clubs and commercial providers are having padel courts built. The noise of padel is different compared to other sports. The noise, depending on the location, is regularly perceived as annoying by local residents.
The sound of padel is caused by the hitting of the racket against the ball, but the contact of the ball with the cage construction also creates a penetrating sound. The intensity of the game, the level of the players and the shouting of the players also affect the sound emission. Most noise and main source of complaints is the noise between the racket and the ball.
Activities Decree
The Activities Decree (part of the Environmental Law (General Provisions) Act (Wabo) contains standard limit values for noise. When assessing the limit values, human voice noise and peak noise from the practice of sport may be disregarded. Only the average noise of padel play is therefore assessed.

Areas of influence of padel courts
To clarify the impact of noise from the padel courts, an acoustic study is necessary. With this study, the noise impact on noise-sensitive areas can be determined in detail. It is very important to use the correct noise source data for the noise emitted by one or more padel courts. Several noise measurements have already been carried out at Dutch clubs with padel courts and the analysis shows that the noise source data is between 89 and 91 decibels.
From a collaboration between various parties (including NOC*NSF, KNLTB and NSG), the Handreiking Padel en Geluid (Handbook of Padel and Noise) was drawn up. In that Guide, a noise level to be used is proposed and areas of influence of padel courts are also calculated.
The area of influence is thereby defined as an area within which acoustic research is certainly necessary and within which it is also likely that noise-reducing facilities are needed. Based on the area of influence, an impression of the feasibility of an initiative and the need for noise-reducing facilities can be obtained prior to the spatial planning or licensing process. The area of influence is indicative. Only with a detailed acoustic study can the legal limit values actually be tested.

Distance of padel court from residences
The distances between padel courts and residences are different for each location and this depends on several factors, such as the location of the sports activities, the duration of the activities and various factors that can influence the transmission of the noise (such as buildings and other noise-shielding objects). The limit set out in the Activities Decree is 50 dB(A)-meaning 50 dB(A) in the daytime period and 45 dB(A) in the evening period. To determine the correct distance between padel courts and residences, it is necessary to carry out acoustic research.

Acoustic survey
Allesvoorpadel works with Van dB Advies to carry out acoustic research on locations to determine whether padel courts can be built. Van dB Advies is a specialist in acoustic research for padel courts and a consultant for the tennis association KNLTB.
Solutions
Canopies:
Allesvoorpadel is working on several canopies, allowing players to play padel outside even in bad weather. Allesvoorpadel's Steel Construction canopy and Multi Spankap canopy also work against the noise pollution surrounding padel. The perforated roof panels of the steel structure reduce padel noise. Depending on the situation, this roof can be made fully or partially sound-insulating.
Noise barriers:
Noise barriers can also be placed behind the padel court. The length and height of those screens should always be tailored to the local situation.
