pickleball game rules
Pickleball is a dynamic and accessible racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The game is played on a rectangular pitch measuring 6.1 by 13.4 metres, about one second the size of a padel court. The court is divided by a net and the game is played with a pickleball racket and a plastic ball with holes.
Serve
- Serving is done underhand with both feet behind the service line
- The serve must go diagonally to the opponent's service box
- The serve alternates between the left and right service box
- The ball must not bounce before serving and must be hit without errors
- When serving, the ball must not enter the ''non-volley zone''
Points
The scoring for pickleball game rules is as follows:
- Points can only be scored by the serving team
- A match is usually played to 11 points, with at least 2 points difference to win
- A match consists of 2 or 3 games won
- After a game, there is a change of playing side
- In tournaments there may be variations, such as playing to 15 or 21 points
Non-volley zone
At pickleball, there is a non-volley zone:
- This zone is located 2.1 metres from the net on both sides
- Players are not allowed to hit a volley in this zone
- If you hit the net, the point goes to the opponent
- The zone may only be entered to play a ball that has bounced first.
Further rules
- You may also return the ball outside the net, even below net height
- Each team is allowed two 30-second time-outs per game
- There is a maximum of 2 minutes rest between games
- Stick balls or unintentional double hitting in one movement is allowed
- You decide on in and out on your half of the pitch, in case of doubt you decide in favour of the opposing team
- Balls you have not seen for sure as ‘ out’ are considered ‘in’ (so no let).
